Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

The CRCA has been involved in developing a Geographic Information System (GIS) since the early 1990s. GIS is a computerized system used to input, store, retrieve, manipulate and analyze geographically referenced or geospatial data.

This data can be in the form of printed copies of maps or electronic maps that are linked to computer databases.

A GIS can integrate data from a wide variety of sources including mapping, resource inventories, field data and electronic databases to name a few. Instead of having to refer to a number of different sources, a GIS user can obtain information about the physical characteristics and the natural resources of a particular area or site from one computer database.

We use GIS to assist us with making decisions about land use planning, managing our own lands and stewardship programs. We also use these tools for conducting site inspections and preparing resource inventories.

Current and Recent Projects

Current projects include:

  • preparing mapping for our Development, Interference with Wetlands and Alterations to Shorelines and Watercourses Regulations
  • conservation lands mapping and databases for forest management plans, master plans, publications and property management
  • mapping and databases for drinking water source protection
  • mapping for the Watershed Report Card.

Completed projects include:

  • mapping and databases for the Central Cataraqui Region Natural Heritage Study
  • mapping for the Napanee Natural Heritage Study
  • mapping for the Mac Johnson Wildlife Area Master Plan.

Pilot Project for Online Mapping

The CRCA is participating in a pilot project with six other Conservation Authorities. Since January 2007, we have been developing an online, interactive mapping service.

This project is supported by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and its Land Information Ontario initiative.

To have a look at the work completed so far, please visit www.camaps.ca, accept the disclaimer and you will be redirected to our new online mapping service. There you will be able to view and customize maps using data such as regulated areas, infrastructure, sensitive areas, land features, municipal boundaries and air photography.

We are still in the pilot phase of this project. Although the site is running, we will continue to identify issues and make updates and changes as needed. We welcome your comments about the camaps website and the project.
