Land Acquisition

Protection and improvement of forests is an important CRCA initiative on conservation lands.
Conservation Authorities purchase land for a number of reasons:
  • to protect it from being developed (e.g. flood plains, wetlands)
  • to undertake water management projects (e.g. dams, flood control structures)
  • to preserve significant natural features or to conserve wildlife habitat
  • to provide public access to the natural environment.

Recent changes to tax legislation have made donations of land to the CRCA more attractive to potential donors. Since 1997, we have accepted four donations of land.

Forestry-Related Acquisition

Over the past 30 years, forestry has been a major initiative of the CRCA. A number of our properties have been purchased for forestry purposes.
  • Clancy (Town of Greater Napanee)
  • Bastard and South Burgess (Township of Rideau Lakes)
  • Eden Grove (Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands)
  • Marble Rock (Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands)
  • Larue Mills (Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands)
  • Vandewal (Township of South Frontenac)

The CRCA has three ongoing land acquisition programs:

  • Little Cataraqui Creek Valleylands Acquisition Project (City of Kingston)
  • Bayview Wetland (Loyalist Township)
  • Three Lakes Conservation Area (Township of Front of Yonge, Township of Athens).

We currently own more than 4000 hectares of land throughout our watershed. The distribution of our land holdings is shown on the map in the left bar.
