CRCA honours partners in conservation

Kingston - The Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority honoured 13 individuals for public service and 24 private sector and government organizations for supporting conservation authority projects, June 27.

"We have an impressive list of people and organizations to honour tonight, a reflection of the increased activity levels in many important aspects of the CRCA's work," conservation authority Chair Robert Morrison told the audience.

Individuals were honoured for service on the CRCA board of directors. It is composed of 17 people representing 11 member municipalities.

The now-mayor of Athens, John Conley, was recognized for 31 years of service. Loyalist Township Councillor Ric Bresee and former Kingston Councillor George Sutherland were both recognized for six years' service.

Others recognized were: Michael Brown, Elizabethtown-Kitley Township; Ronald Smith, Gananoque; Derek McKeown, Greater Napanee; Floyd Patterson, Kingston; Ed Smith, Kingston; the late Dennis Arrowsmith, Leeds and the Thousand Islands; Neil Patterson, Rideau Lakes Township and Gary Davison, South Frontenac Township.
Also recognized were Ian Hodson for work at Lemoine Point Conservation Area and Don Coulter for efforts with the Cataraqui Trail.

Among the organizations recognized was the Cataraqui Conservation Foundation, the CRCA's fund-raising arm. It doubled a $100,000 pledge toward the CRCA's acquisition of part of the Bayview Wetland. The foundation's Stewart Fyfe presented a cheque for $213,000.

Another major honouree was the Nature Conservancy of Canada that donated $450,000 toward Bayview and more for other land purchases.

Also honoured were: The Community Foundation of Greater Kingston, The Michael Davies Charitable Foundation, Trans Canada Pipeline Limited, Invista at Kingston and Maitland, NPIF Cogen Kingston Inc., Ducks Unlimited Canada, City of Kingston, TD Friends of the Environment, Lennox Snow Fence Company Ltd., Procter and Gamble Ltd., Frontenac Community Futures Development Corporation, The Ontario Aggregate Resources Corporation, Ministry of Natural Resources, Ministry of the Environment, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Environment Canada, Trees Ontario Foundation, Cataraqui Trail Management Board, Canadian Ski Patrol, Friends of Lemoine Point, Friends of Mac Johnson Wildlife Area and the Rideau Trail Association.

The CRCA holds a partners appreciation event every few years coinciding with turnover on its board of directors.
