In August 2008, heavy rains and a collapsing beaver dam washed out the boardwalk on
Trail 1 at Gould Lake Conservation Area. Trail 1 is also the main branch of the Rideau
Trail, a hiking trail which links Kingston to Ottawa. Thanks to hard work by Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority (CRCA) staff and
volunteers from the Rideau Trail Association, the boardwalk was rebuilt over the fall and
winter.
Funding for the new boardwalk came from the CRCA, Rideau Trail Association, Limestone District School Board and a private donor.
The volunteer and financial contributions will be recognized at an official opening event at Gould Lake Conservation Area north of Sydenham on Saturday, May 9. At 10:00 a.m., there will be an official opening ceremony. This will be followed by two hikes at 10:30 a.m. led by the Rideau Trail Association. Everyone is encouraged to attend the official opening and the hikes.
