Cataraqui Source Protection Committee to host roundtables

The Cataraqui Source Protection Committee is hosting a series of 12 roundtables in 2011. The purpose of the roundtables is to involve community members in the preparation of the Cataraqui source protection plan.

“We’re hoping to involve everyone including municipal councils and staff, community groups, business owners, landowners and residents,” said John Williamson, Source Protection Committee Chair. “People are invited to come out and share their ideas for developing a plan to protect our local sources of drinking water.”

“The source protection plan for the Cataraqui area will outline not only how local sources of drinking water should be protected, but also who should be responsible for the efforts, and when activities should occur,” added Williamson.

The proposed plan will require the approval of the Ontario Minister of the Environment.

Roundtables are being held in 12 communities in the Cataraqui Source Protection Area. These are mainly located where there are municipal water systems. Regional groundwater will be the focus of the three roundtables at Athens, Marysville and Greater Napanee. (See attached list for roundtable dates and locations.)

Facilitator Sue Cumming will engage the participants in interactive discussions that will address key source protection topics. Source Protection Committee members and Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority staff will share some draft policy ideas for discussion by the group.

Roundtable participants are encouraged to register in advance so that they can be sent background materials to prepare for the meeting.

Registration can be done by e-mail at roundtables@cataraquiregion.on.ca or phone (613) 546-4228 ext. 248 or toll-free 1-877-956-CRCA (2722) ext. 248.
