CRCA fundraising drive tops $850,000

Kingston - Two local groups have added their contributions to the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority's (CRCA) campaign to raise $1 million to buy part of Bayview Wetland, north of Amherstview.

The Rotary Club of Kingston Frontenac has donated $25,000; Kingston Field Naturalists has increased its donation to $44,000.

"Rotarians recognize the importance of giving back to the community," says club President Heather Ford.

The donation continues Rotary's support for environmental projects. This club began the development of Rotary Park and helped refurbish it in 2005, says Ms. Ford.
"Green space and parklands have been at the roots of the Rotary Club of Kingston Frontenac for more than 30 years," adds charter member and Past President Bernie Breen.

In other news, the Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) topped up their donation to $44,000, says CRCA General Manager Steve Knechtel.

KFN is a well-established local club with the objective of preserving nature and stimulating interest in, and appreciation of, the natural world. Last June, KFN conducted a one-day inventory, or bio-blitz, of Bayview Wetland. It confirmed the wide variety of plant, animal and bird species found there.

"Thanks to the generosity of these organizations, our fund-raising effort exceeds $850,000," says Mr. Knechtel. "That leaves almost $150,000 to raise and we hope those who care about the preservation of Bayview's unique ecosystem will help."

To donate, make your cheque payable to the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority and send it to Box 160, 1641 Perth Road, Glenburnie, Ontario, K0H 1S0.
