New greenhouse opens at conservation area

Kingston - The Ian Hodson Greenhouse at Lemoine Point Conservation Area Native Plant Nursery, a joint project of the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority (CRCA) and the Friends of Lemoine Point, opens October 12 at 2 p.m.

Patricia Hodson and her son, Peter, will officially open the greenhouse. Its name honours her late husband Ian, a founding member of the Friends of Lemoine Point.

"This recognizes Ian's many years of service to the Friends of Lemoine Point Conservation Area," says Friends' member Jane Murphy.

The greenhouse measures 16 feet by 30 feet. Its metal framework is connected to a concrete pad. That framework is covered by a polycarbonate skin.

The native plant nursery was established to ensure that native species are used as a stock source for habitat restoration. This is because native species are naturally adapted to the area and are genetically programmed to succeed.

The Friends launched the nursery project in 2004 and it has grown ever since. The greenhouse was funded by the Friends with contributions from the Hodson family, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and a WalMart-Evergreen grant.

A reception follows the official ceremony on October 12. The event is open to the public and may be reached via the Coverdale Drive entrance to the conservation area.
