Community Relations

Displays and open houses are one of the ways that the CRCA gets to meet with members of our community.
Conservation authorities are community-based environmental organizations, so working with the community is an important aspect of our work. The CRCA works with municipalities, community groups, volunteers and landowners to maintain and improve the environment in our watershed.

Since most of the land in our watershed is privately owned, it is important for landowners to have the knowledge, skills and resources to make good decisions about managing their lands. We try to achieve this through all of our programs, but in particular, through our community relations and education programs.

There are two main objectives to our community relations and education programs:

  • To increase public awareness of the CRCA and our programs, projects and facilities.
  • To provide information and education to people about the natural environment and their role in its protection and improvement.

We use a number of different methods to achieve these objectives:

  • producing and distributing a newsletter, brochures and information publications
  • maintaining a website
  • promoting and advertising our programs and facilities
  • developing and delivering education programs
  • hosting special events and attending community events.

Public participation is very important to the success of our planning initiatives. Open houses, information sessions and public meetings are an important component of any major planning studies or program initiatives. Advertising of these events is done through local news media and on this website.

Fundraising

Over the past several years, we have had to rely more on generating revenue and raising funds. In order to be successful with these initiatives, the public needs to be familiar with the CRCA and the many aspects of our organization. Promotion and communications have become increasingly important to ensure that we are able to secure the funds to do all of our other work.

The CRCA raises funds in a variety of ways including grant applications, sponsorships and fundraising events. We also work closely with the Cataraqui Conservation Foundation to raise funds for education and land acquisition, and the Friends of Lemoine Point and the Friends of Mac Johnson Wildlife Area to raise funds for specific projects.

The CRCA is a registered charitable organization. Donations can be directed to any of our programs, conservation areas or services. Please call (613) 546-4228 for more information.
