Development Technician (contract position)

The Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority (CRCA) seeks a Development Technician who will focus on reviewing applications for permits issued under Ontario Regulation 148/06 - Development, Interference with Wetlands and Alterations to Shorelines and Watercourses. This regulation protects public safety, property and the environment by requiring approval for work that could impact or be impacted by natural hazards.  This is an eight month contract position.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Evaluate permit applications with regard to the effect of the proposed works on natural hazards and fish habitat as per CRCA policies and procedures and other applicable legislation
  2. Inspect sites for which permit applications are received
  3. Work with applicants, municipalities, and contractors to achieve environmentally sound development
  4. Handle inquiries regarding the regulation and permit requirements, conduct compliance inspections and maintain files.

Requirements for the position include:

  1. A diploma in environmental science, civil engineering or a related discipline
  2. Knowledge of natural hazards (e.g., flooding, erosion, slope failure), stream and wetland function, fisheries, channel flow and hydraulics, construction practices, and erosion control measures
  3. Knowledge of the Development, Interference with Wetlands and Alterations to Shorelines and Watercourses regulation and other applicable legislation (e.g., Planning Act, Building Code Act, Federal Fisheries Act)
  4. Minimum 1 year relevant work experience
  5. Strong analytical, organizational and communication abilities
  6. Interest and ability to work independently and safely within a team environment
  7. Competency with computer-based mapping and interpretation of air photos
  8. Familiarity with Microsoft Office
  9. The ability to inspect locations with rough terrain and in inclement weather and
  10. A valid Ontario driver's license.

Salary:  $41,809 - $55,745 per year (to be prorated to 8 month period).

Term:  Eight month contract position ending October 31, 2012 (35 hour work week).

Nature Explorers Camp Instructor (2 positions)

Nature Explorers Camp (Ages 6 to 11)
Monday to Friday 8:30 - 4:30 (8 am to 5 pm)
Little Cataraqui Creek Conservation Area

Job Requirements
- Must have current first-aid and (Child and Adult) C.P.R. certification
- Current NLS Lifeguarding Certification considered an asset
- Must have experience working with children
- Must have a basic knowledge and interest in nature and the outdoors
- Must be interested in developing nature based programs
- Must produce a current and clear Criminal Record Check, upon request
- Must produce a current driver’s abstract for insurance purposes, upon request
- Must have transportation to and from Little Cataraqui Creek Conservation Area

Job Tasks and Responsibilities
- Assist with development, preparation, organization and planning of daily camp program
- Responsible for the care and safety of day camp participants during daily camp games, nature based lessons/activities, lunch/snack times and during field trips to Gould Lake
- Responsible for taking part in one week of staff training and contributing to lesson plans and activities
- Attending the weekly staff meeting
- Taking part in before or after-care
- If NLS certified, will assist with lifeguarding at Gould Lake two days per week
